Kissing the Dolphin
"I want to swim in the water with dolphin" - my to be 3 years old son wanted on his birthday. We went to Mexico to kiss the dolphin.

Cancun

Just before the pandemic hit, my family and I were fortunate enough to visit Mexico. For my oldest son, this trip was a dream come true: swimming with dolphins. As for me, I had always wanted to experience the beauty of Mexico, and this trip turned out to be everything we hoped for and more.

Our journey started with an uneventful flight from Toronto to Cancun. However, once we landed, the chaos at the airport was undeniable. Cancun is a popular tourist destination, so there were crowds of people rushing to find their buses. Eventually, we found ours, and after a 40-minute drive, we arrived at our resort.

At the resourt, check-in

Check-in took longer than expected, which taught me a valuable lesson: never fall into the trap of answering questions like “What’s the purpose of your visit?” or “Are you celebrating anything?” Some agents will try to upsell you on tours or services that may not be necessary. After a long flight and the hot, humid weather, you’ll likely just want to get to your room. Trust me, those agents will circle back later with offers, some of which may actually be worth exploring, but it’s best to ignore them initially.

One of the most memorable moments at the resort was our golf cart ride to our room. The kids loved it, and we were excited to finally settle in. However, be aware of the iguanas—they’re everywhere!

The resort was filled with activities—swimming in the pool, relaxing on the beach, and enjoying the vibrant nightlife. The food was excellent, with a range of cuisines to choose from, and there were plenty of restaurants, including buffet options. While we could have easily spent the entire trip enjoying the resort, we had a mission: to go to the city and fulfill my son’s dream of swimming with the dolphins.

The highlight of the trip was undoubtedly our time at the dolphin park. It was such a magical experience for all of us. We also had a little surprise for our youngest—a group of musicians serenaded him with a “Happy Birthday” song, which was a sweet and unforgettable moment.

Tulum - a hidden gem

No trip to Mexico would be complete without exploring the beauty beyond the resort. We rented a car for a day trip to Tulum, a UNESCO World Heritage site, and discovered one of the most beautiful places we’ve ever visited. The beaches were stunning, with white sand and clear, turquoise waters, and the natural surroundings were breathtaking.

We spent hours just taking in the views, enjoying the serenity, and soaking up the beauty of the area. Tulum is definitely a hidden gem, and I highly recommend it if you’re planning a trip to Mexico.

FINAL THOUGHTS

Our trip to Mexico was truly unforgettable. From the dolphin adventure to exploring Tulum, we created memories that will last a lifetime. It was the perfect balance of relaxation and adventure, and I couldn’t be more grateful to have shared this experience with my family.
