Cuba – Hot – Sunny – Atlantic
In August 2015 - we went snorkeling for the first time in the Atlantic, from Cuba.

varadero

In August 2015, we had the opportunity to go snorkeling for the first time in the Atlantic, all the way from Cuba. We stayed in Varadero, where the warmth of the people made the trip unforgettable.

Our guide, with a big smile, welcomed us saying, “We don’t have snakes in the forest, nor any U.S. citizens, but this is Canada’s second home, and you are always welcome here.” The relaxed, laid-back vibe of Cuba quickly became apparent.

After a delayed flight from Toronto Pearson, our bellboy at the resort joked, "Everything is chill here in Cuba. We’re always at least an hour late." We soon learned that delays—ranging from 30 minutes to 2 hours—were a part of the Cuban experience, but the warmth and laughter of the people made it all part of the charm.

The resort had everything to make our stay comfortable—pools, a beach, lounges, and endless activities. However, we’re not the type to stay in one place for too long, so by day two, we went to explore the Las Cuevas De Bellamar caves and then went snorkeling in the Atlantic, which was truly a magical experience.

Havana

A three-hour drive in a classic taxi took us from Varadero to Havana. The drive was scenic, and as we neared the city, we could feel the transition from more developed areas to the rustic charm of Cuba. The small houses might be humble, but the people’s hearts are enormous. In Havana, the streets are alive with talented musicians, street food vendors, and local artisans selling their wares. It’s busy, but it never feels chaotic.

On our way back, we hit a thunderstorm near Varadero. The rain was intense, flooding parts of the city—something that reminded me of the tropical monsoon rains back home.

Cuba’s currency is the Cuban Peso, but the Cuban Convertible Peso (CUC), which is roughly equivalent to 1 USD, is widely used. Be sure to tip at least 1 CUC each time you receive a service. It’s a common practice, especially in tourist areas.

This trip to Cuba was one for the books—filled with adventures, beautiful landscapes, and the genuine kindness of the Cuban people. It was a perfect mix of relaxation, exploration, and new experiences that we will always remember.

Cuba is a popular destination for Canadians due to its proximity, affordable travel packages, and beautiful beaches. The country offers an ideal mix of relaxation and cultural exploration, making it a top choice for those seeking a warm, tropical getaway. Its all-inclusive resorts, rich history, and vibrant culture attract Canadian tourists year-round, particularly during the winter months when they escape the cold. Cuba's friendly locals and welcoming atmosphere make it feel like a second home for many Canadian visitors.
